The Rotary Club of Greenford was in the first stages of being founded when the war broke out and the idea had to be postponed. It was restarted in 1947 and was Chartered on the 22nd of April 1948.
The first President was a local Doctor, Dr. Angus Weston, and the other founder members were all well known local business men. Until recently two of these were still actively serving, sadly with the death of Founder member Herbert Grand in June 1999, Eric Sands a local Optician is our only Founder member.
Over the years much Service has been provided by our Club along with local organisations. Members have served as Chairmen, Secretarys, Treasurers, with local Scout Groups, Youth Clubs, Pensioners Societys and many others. A Grand Fete was organised in 1958 in Perivale Park, opened by Freddie Mills the Boxer. The Fete raised over £350 which was donated to the proposed "Old Peoples Home" in Northolt (was known as Northolt House).
In 1960/62 the club worked with other local clubs to buy a factory in Hanwell and set up a limited company to re-train men and women who had recovered from mental illness and get them fit and able to return to unsheltered work.
Each Christmas since 1968 members have played carols before a Christmas tree in Greenford Broadway and raised money from the local public, which they distribute to local organisations thus Furthering and Encouraging their work within the community.
